Music at First Mennonite

A variety of musical styles are used at First Mennonite Church.

For much of its congregational singing, the congregation uses the current denominational hymnal of the Mennonite Church, Hymnal: A Worship Book . The hymnal includes a broad range of hymns from many centuries and originating in many countries. Many hymns are sung in a 4-part acapella style although the piano and occasionally other instruments are used for accompaniment.

Several times a month, a contemporary Worship Team leads the congregation in singing contemporary Christian music accompanied by piano, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, drums, and other percussion instruments. This joyous time of praise and worship at the beginning of the service involves the use of an overhead projection system to allow freedom of expression such as hand-clapping.

Instrumental music is often used for a prelude, offertory, and postlude. In addition, special music by small groups of vocalists and instrumentalists allows congregational members to use their musical gifts in a variety of ways.

A choir is usually formed for the seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. A variety of four-part music often accompanied by piano is prepared to enhance the worship services during these times.
